  Literary Genres Literary Genres are the categories we use to identify different types of writing. At the highest level, we categorize writing by: Non- Fiction Fiction Poetry Drama Each of those four categories has several sub-categories and sub-sub-categories. You could list well over 100 commonly-known genres in the current literary market.
